Amid the rolling hills and citrus groves of San Diego County, founder
Deborah Szekely developed
a unique philosophy of personal health and fitness
- little knowing she was about to start a revolution that resulted in
the birth of an entire industry. |

Szekely and her husband managed a
modest retreat known as "Rancho La Puerta" - or "The Door" in Spanish" -
which grew from a "bring-your-own-tent" health farm to a beautiful,
Spanish-style adobe resort. Eventually, in response to requests from
guests for a higher level of luxury, Deborah opened a new property in
1958 that combined intensive training in personal health with gracious
hospitality, inspired by the ancient Honjin inns of Japan. |
